What is nail fungus?
Affecting 10% of the population, fungal nails or onychomycosis (OM) is a persistent fungal infection of the nail bed and nailplate. Signs of fungal nail infection include yellow discolouration of the nails, rougher ridges and crumbling of the nail. Fungal nail infections are caused by fungal spores finding their way underneath the nail. The fungus feeds on the keratin within your nail and thrives in the moist conditions that exist under the nail. Your nails only protection from infection is the shiny top surface where the fungus cannot penetrate. However, even a tiny crack can allow the fungus to penetrate the nail where it will thrive on the nail bed. The fungus can also access the nail bed around the perimeter of your nails. The best defense against fungal nail infection is good personal hygiene and avoiding nail injuries. Nail fungus can be
very difficult to treat and patients often become frustrated with the lack of progress.
How we treat fungal nails?
Fungal Nail can be hard to treat, so it’s important that you see a professional. There are a number of treatment options available such as paint-on treatments and oral anti-fungal tablets. Each treatment varies in price and success rates. At Balance Podiatry, we recommend laser treatment. Fungal nail laser treatment easily penetrates the nail and generates heat at the site of infection beneath the nail plate. The fungal cells are destroyed before your healthy cells are damaged meaning laser therapy is pain free. All you will feel is a warm sensation on the nail and nail bed.
It’s important to note that nails have no living cells, even healthy looking nails. This is an important point as a dead cell has no potential to fight off an infection and heal. This means that once laser is applied and fungal cells have been destroyed, visible signs of the nail infection will remain. As the healthy nail grows out however, the damaged/infected nail will slowly disappear. This will take several months so it’s important to remain patient.
The laser treatment does not require any local anaesthesia and there is no recovery period. It’s a simple walk in, walk out procedure with no side effects and no visible harm to the nail or skin.
What to expect at a laser treatment service?
When you book a fungal nail assessment appointment with the Podiatrist they will take a history, assess/diagnose, recommend treatment options and prepare the nails for laser therapy if indicated. This appointment takes approximately 30 minutes. Health fund rebates are available.
If treatment can be provided at this consult the assessment fee is waived.
The number of treatments required is determined by the number of infected nails, severity of the fungal infection, your age and general health. Your podiatrist will advise on the number of laser therapy appointments recommended for your treatment, but generally, 1-3 treatments are required.
